Social Recreation with Community Connections

Social recreation provides structured activities to enhance social skills and allow participants to build life-long friendships in real-life situations.

Explorers is the first social recreation program from Community Connections, giving adults with IDD and/or ASD a chance to get outside and enjoy nature, develop social skills, and build new friendships.

There is always something new to see and somewhere else to explore – meadows, salt marsh, sandy beaches, tidal flats, woodland trails. Sharing the experience forms stronger bonds and creates lasting memories.

On Saturdays from October 30 to November 20, 2021, the Explorers can enjoy:

  • an Owl Prowl (Saturday, October 30, 4pm-7pm) at Mass Audubon’s Barnstable Great Marsh Wildlife Sanctuary. Listen for the calls of Great Horned Owls and Eastern Screech Owls. An experienced birder and naturalist will be our guide as we look and listen for owls and other nighttime sights and sounds of nature.
  • a moderate hike on Maple Swamp Loop
  • Cape Cod Canal history and museum with Park Ranger Elisa Carey
  • a moderate hike on Sandy Neck Nature Trail with our guide, Zak Mertz from Cape Wildlife Center

This fee-based program is $375. The Explorers program strives to develop and support meaningful and healthy relationships for individuals with high-functioning IDD and/or ASD while hiking through the beauty of Cape Cod. Get some fresh air and a fresh perspective!

Our goal is to help participants gain confidence in their ability to make friends by learning skills that enable them to develop friendships beyond the IDD/ASD community, including work, volunteerism and interactions with people in their everyday lives.

Learn Social Skills

It can be challenging for individuals with IDD and/or ASD to understand the nuances of friendships and communicating with others.

The Explorers program aims to teach adults with IDD and/or ASD improved social skills to develop more friendships and healthy relationships while having a good time doing things they enjoy.

Let’s Go for a Hike

Utilizing natural environments on Cape Cod, we engage groups of 6 individuals on Saturdays.

An experienced and trained Community Connections staff member accompanies Explorers in activities, while helping them to improve their social skills.

Provide a Safe Environment

Community Connections staff provide a safe environment for participants to engage in friendship building with members of the group, among community partners, and the public.

By creating and planning activities in the community and bringing in local experts, the Explorers program staff guides communication, helps identify social cues, and offers suggestions on appropriate interactions.

The guidance from staff is woven naturally into activities and experiences. Through this process, participants gain skills and confidence in growing friendships.
