Evan Barnatt, a Dennis-Yarmouth high school senior, is happy to have year-round work as a prep cook at Clancy’s restaurant on Upper County Road in Dennis, thanks to the success of Executive Chef, Jim Ward’s marketing idea.
Evan’s primary responsibility at Clancy’s is to make 8 oz. Angus beef hamburger patties. During the busy summer months, Evan typically works two shifts per week making patties and learning additional prep work duties. Recently, however, Clancy’s hamburger sales declined and Jim was afraid that he would have to lay Evan off for the winter months.
Because of Evan’s strong work ethic and his desire to continue building appropriate co-worker relationships, Jim wanted to find a way to keep Evan employed. So he decided to run an ad in the Cape Cod Times with a coupon for $3.00 off an 8 oz. Angus burger served with organic fries and a fresh half sour pickle. As a result of this promotion, hamburger sales tripled, from approximately 100 burgers a week to over 300 burgers a week in a short amount of time.
Evan now has year-round employment and Clancy’s has increased sales, an example of the successful relationship between a hard working employee and a creative manager. According to Jim, “During these hard times, it’s important that we help each other out when we can.”
